In Alaska as well as all other parts of the country, there has never been a more competitive time to seek Alaska Scholarships, Grants and Student Loans to assist with paying for a postsecondary education, but the money is there. If you are looking for Alaska Scholarships, Grants and Student Loans, the key to getting any type of financial aid is to apply for everything that you qualify for and to apply early.

For most Alaska grants, scholarships and loans that are processed through your schools financial aid office, you will need to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The deadline for completing the FAFSA is April 15. There are other community grants and scholarships that may not have this requirement, but will have an application process of their own.

While most students are interested in grants or scholarships that will provide "free money" to go to school, these are not the only tools that are available to help. No matter what type of postsecondary program that you are enrolled in, there is money out there to help. Here are a two to consider:

1.  AlaskAdvantage Education Grant

This grant provides need based financial aid to qualifying Alaska students who are enrolled in qualifying postsecondary education programs in Alaska. Designed specifically for those who have shown exceptional academic skill. These students have usually placed in the top quartile of SAT or ACT scores. There are Alaska Scholarships available for other students enrolled in programs that have been designed as workforce shortage programs: Such as allied health science, community and social service, teaching and paraprofessional education and process industry/natural resources extraction industry. Grants range from $500 to $3000 per year for students with unmet financial need.

2.  Alaska Performance Scholarship

This brand new Alaska Scholarship will just be available for the first time to the graduating class of 2011. Created in 2011, it was designed as an invitation to academic excellence and was extended as a challenge and a reward to students, educators and parents. This Alaska Scholarship aims to help to improve overall high school performance and preparation for postsecondary education and further success. The Alaska Performance Scholarship will be available for each qualifying student for four years at any accredited college or university in Alaska. If the qualifying student chooses to begin their education out of state, they will have up to six years after graduation from high school to use the scholarship at a qualifying Alaskan school.

You do not have to delay your education due to the lack of financial resources. There are many other Alaska Scholarships, Grants and Student Loans available for students who qualify academically as well as those that just possess qualifying financial need.
