A doctorate degree is the highest education credential and can take from 3-7 years to complete, depending on the subject. A doctoral degree is often a requirement for scholars pursing a career in academia. Doctoral degree programs usually require a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree and a dissertation or thesis, except in medical doctor (MD) and juris doctor (JD) programs.
