An unsubsidized loan is one on which the borrower pays the interest from the first day the interest accrues. The federal government usually pays the interest on a subsidized loan during the time the student is still in school. On an unsubsidized loan, however, the borrower is responsible for the interest from the date the loan is disbursed, whether the student is still in school or not.
