Academics were excellent and student-teacher ratio was very low. Plenty of seminars with less than 5 students, even self-created seminars... JRR Tolkein anyone? We did with just 4 students and a faculty advisor. Access to great science - how about a biology or astronomy thesis were you get to run the instruments yourself!?
