The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising is a private for-profit institution of education that offers programs in the fashion industry. It was founded in 1939 to provide education about fashion business and merchandising. The college is the only four-year institution in the country committed to the business of fashion. Its programs use various aspects including classroom instruction, internships, guest lectures, and field trips to provide an understanding of the field. It also helps students build a solid liberal arts foundation. The student to faculty ratio is about 9 students to one instructor and the average class size is around 17 students. For the 2009-2010 school year, about 1,567 students attended the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising.

The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising campus occupies four buildings that include modern computer labs, learning centers, bookstore, labs, studios, coffee bar, and a large comprehensive library with various resources such as online databases, slides, software, videos, and periodicals.

The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The programs are also registered by the New York State Education Department.
