Providence College is a private, co-ed Catholic university situated just two miles from downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Providence College was founded in 1917 by a mutual collaboration of the Diocese of Providence and the dedicated Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph. Today, the College focuses primarily in an undergraduate, liberal arts education.
Although Providence College is a Catholic institution of higher education, it is committed to providing higher education to students of all faiths. It was under the mentoring and guidance of Bishop Matthew Hawkins that the College was able to be launched on a successfully firm foundation. Armed with gifts of almost 17 acres of land and $10,000.00 in scholarship funds, mostly from moderate donor contributions, the College became a reality.
