College History

The University of La Verne is located about 35 miles east of Los Angeles in the city of La Verne, California. It is composed of several different colleges including the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business & Public Management, College of Law and College of Education. Since then, they have opened several smaller college campuses throughout southern California including some on military bases. University of La Verne prides itself on giving each and every student the individual attention needed to succeed. There are nearly 50,000 graduates in the professional workforce today.

University of La Verne, originally Lordsberg College, was founded in 1891 by members of the German Christian sect, the Church of the Brethren. In 1917, both the college and surrounding area were renamed University of La Verne. Through the 1920s and 1930s the majority of the students enrolled were studying teacher education. The very first master's degree from the college was given in 1965, and its first doctorate in 1979. Since then more campuses have opened and the college has labeled itself as non-sectarian. Locations other than the main campus in La Verne are in San Luis Obispo, Victorville, Ontario, Bakersfield, Irvine, Burbank, and Oxnard, and on military bases Point Mugu Naval Air Station, and Vandenberg Air Force Base.
